Contrary to popular belief, Bali is more than just Legian, Kuta and Seminyak. Although it is the most famous island holiday destination in the Indonesian archipelago, the south-east region of the island – more specifically, the Nusa Islands – is a lesser travelled area with colourful marine biodiversity and pristine coral reef gardens waiting to be explored.

The Nusa Islands consist of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan, all which are not part of the main island of Bali. Nusa Penida is the biggest island of the trio and Nusa Lembongan is the most visited. Nusa Ceningan is the smallest island and is sitting between the former two.

In recent years, the number of tourists visiting the islands of Southern Bali has risen, with many activities one can do like diving, snorkelling, surfing and also trekking and exploring the forests. All in all, it is a perfect getaway place away from the crowds on mainland Bali to relax and take the stress out of our minds.

How to get there?

To get to the Nusa Islands, there are a number of routes by public ferry, speed boats, charter boats or cruises from Padang Bai, Benoa Harbour and Sanur Beach to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan.

NUSA PENIDA

1. Pura Goa Giri Putri

Located 150 metres above sea level and situated on a limestone hill, visitors have to climb up a steep winding staircase to get to the entrance of Giri Putri Cave. A small donation will be required, and a sarong will be given (rented) for visiting the temple. Thereafter, “holy water” will be sprinkled upon entering the cave.

The cave is actually a place of worship for Buddhist and Hindu devotees. There is a statue of Guan Yin and other deities and more than 100 people praying at a time daily.

2. Crystal Bay

As the name suggests, the waters here are crystal clear making it one of the best locations to dive and snorkel. Crystal Bay is made up of a long strip of sandy beach and is located on the northern coast facing Nusa Ceningan. It is also a great spot to watch the sunset.

There are also cafés and shops selling snacks and cold drinks to prevent your stomach from grumbling.

5. Dream Beach

What sets the secluded Dream Beach and other beaches apart is the idyllic waters and the white powdery sand. By secluded, it means that this place is well away from ports where all the boats travelling to and fro the island, hence providing all the peace and tranquillity.
