Komodo Island is an island in Indonesia that is famed for its Komodo dragons, a species of monitor lizard that can grow up to 3 metres long. Komodo dragons are mostly found in Indonesia, although a small percentage of the endangered species can be found in Australia as well. The best place to find these massive lizards are at Rinca Island in the Komodo National Park.
Not far away from Komodo are other islands with unique offerings as well. Visitors can take a trip to Moyo Island to view its beautiful waterfalls and volcanic craters. A boat ride away, travellers can witness one of the world’s seven pink beaches, which is a visual treat caused by the mixing of red coral fragments and white sand. At most of the islands, clear blue waters make for great diving and snorkelling spots. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some manta rays on one of your dives.
Adventurers will undoubtedly love hiking up Padar Island’s hill for a magnificent view of their surroundings. While sunrises and sunsets are spectacular, the picturesque views of coasts, mountains, and sky at other times of the day are still well worth the hike. Hikers are advised to wear proper hiking shoes instead of slippers or sandals due to the often-tough nature of the hikes.
To get to Komodo Island, visitors often travel via boats from the harbour town of Labuan Bajo on Flores Island. Travellers who can spare the time should not miss out on the offerings of this quaint fishing town as well. The markets offer a vast array of seafood, so visitors can pick up a fresh catch for the evening’s meal.
The rich biodiversity, breath-taking sights, and exciting water activities make Komodo Island a must-go destination for every adventurous traveller.
